Seen and Heard: Women and Girls in the Midlands

Starting in the Fall of 2017, Indie Grits Labs is partnering with the Women’s Rights and Empowerment Network on a photo advocacy project. Working with women recruited through six local community organizations, IGL is assisting in teaching participants the basics of visual storytelling through photography, documenting the process, and ultimately curating and disseminating this work through online platforms and a series of exhibits in the Spring of 2018.

Seen and Heard uses the PhotoVoice methodology, an advocacy tool blending photography and critical thinking to analyze problems through the perspectives of community members. The goal of this project is to allow participants to speak on the challenges and opportunities faced by women and girls within the Midlands of South Carolina. Through this, WREN and its partners seek to understand the lives of those they advocate for while inspiring others to work together to create better communities for all who live in the region.

Seen and Heard is funded through a Connected Communities Grant from the Central Carolina Community Foundation as well as the Sisters of Charity of South Carolina.
