Southern native and Rock Hill local Micah Troublefield brings us Crass, a candid story of a couples attempt to get it on in the backseat of their car. Through comedy and nostalgia many can relate to this tale of clumsy lovers. You can read more about Micah and his work below.
What is your connection to the South?
I’ve lived in South Carolina since I was 5, and my family has been here for multiple generations before me. I don’t have any connection to the Nascar, guns and football lifestyle that most people not from the south picture, but luckily you can find great people and great art anywhere.
Where did you get your inspiration for this work?
My movie is about a couple trying to have sex in a car and how awkward that can be… so, the inspiration question can be a little embarrassing. But yeah, cars are awkward.
How did you start making films?
I lucked out and had a videography class in High School that changed my life. Before that I wanted to be a guitarist in a successful punk band, but that doesn’t really exist or pay money, so I’m glad I abandoned that dream for film.
Did anything interesting or funny happen on set during the shooting?
We filmed the whole thing over two nights, wrapping on Valentine’s Day morning as the sun rose. It was the only two nights of the year that were in the 20’s, and the actors were shivering and teeth-chattering between every take. It wasn’t very funny at the time, and it turns out that space heaters don’t do much when you’re well below freezing, but it was a good bonding-by-fire situation to be in.
What do you look forward to the most during Indie Grits?
I love everything about Indie Grits, but honestly the closing night party is too good not to choose. Usually by then I’ve bonded with other filmmakers and we just drink an irresponsible amount, stay up until an ungodly hour, and talk about making movies and how it can be great or it can be awful.
Why should someone see your film?
People should watch Crass if they want to see how accidentally sweet it can be sometimes to watch a couple fail miserably at fucking. (Sorry, you can change that to “forking” or something if you want, but the movie is called Crass, so…)
